MIND Program 2018

ICFAD’s Career Development Committee is pleased to present Mentoring Initiatives for New Deans (MIND), a professional development program for new deans.

Registration for the MIND Program is part of overall Conference Registration.

A MIND Educational Program, “Strategic, Ethical Leadership,” is scheduled for Wednesday, October 3, 2018 as part of the 55th Annual Conference of the International Council of Fine Arts Deans, in Seattle, and is proudly sponsored by 

The MIND Program will take place on the campus of Cornish College of the Arts.

Goals of the MIND Program

  • provide a toolbox for those who have transitioned into administrative leadership roles as a dean of higher education visual and performing art schools and colleges;
  • prepare new deans to take full advantage of the ICFAD Conference specifically and ICFAD membership throughout the year as support structures for their administrative leadership; and
  • build on the ICFAD tradition of “Deans Helping Deans”

Target Audience

While all Deans are welcome to participate, the program is designed to be beneficial to individuals with three years or fewer experience as Deans.

9:00 – 9:15 a.m.                   Welcome/Introductions of Participants/Introduction of Panelists

9:15 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.        Ethical Decision Making for New Deans

Deans and other academic leaders are faced with a myriad of decisions every day, with short or long-term implications. How does a leader discern between competing interests? How do mutual concerns and interests inform daily decision-making?

12:00 – 1:30 p.m.                 Lunch on your own
                                              Enjoy one of the many restaurants in the neighborhood 

1:30 – 3:00 p.m.                   Introduction to Strategic Enrollment Management
                                              (Plenary session including Fellows and Mentors)

Deans as well as other academic leaders at all levels are increasingly involved in enrollment management decisions, and are increasingly concerned about enrollment impacts on budgets and other resources. This session is designed to introduce participants to the concept of strategic enrollment management, which includes the use of data and best practices for decision-making.
