Whitney Hyans

Professor, Visual Art & Design Department, Salt Lake Community College

Professor Whitney King Hyans has been teaching Photography at Salt Lake Community College for 18 years. As part of the Visual Art & Design Department, she has served on a variety of committees that focus on student success. A few significant highlights are her service as the Chair of the Student Art Showcase Committee and a member of the Tuition Waiver Committee. As part of the Photography Program within the Visual Art & Design Department, her work is dedicated to teaching and developing curriculum to advance the Program in this ever-changing age of technology. She currently serves as the Photography Program Specialization Representative, assisting with program assessment, scheduling and student advising.

Ms. Hyans also continues a career in photography specializing in fine art, portrait and advertising photography. The emphasis of her photography is mainly in fine art and has exhibited her work in galleries both locally and nationally.

Her education includes two baccalaureate degrees, a B.S. and B.F.A with emphasis in Photography from Weber State University, and an M.F.A in Photography from the Savannah College of Art & Design. She strives to continue her education and gaining experiences with growing trends and techniques in both the photographic medium and in teaching. The latest endeavor has been participating in the “Beloved Community”, a collaborative project with 6th grade elementary students. Photography and teaching are Whitney’s passions, and that can be seen in every aspect of her work.
